‘My mother-in-law dropped my baby on his head and didn’t care – so I told a huge lie’

A mum was horrified when her mother-in-law dropped her three-month-old baby on his head and left him needing hospital treatment.

But even worse was the fact the mother-in-law showed no remorse or concern for the baby, which utterly infuriated his parents.

So much so, the mum decided to lie to her mother-in-law and pretend the child’s life hung in the balance, so severe was the injury.

This lie prompted the devastated and apologetic reaction the parents had wanted – but it’s caused a rift in the family.

The mum took to Reddit on the forum named ‘Am I The A**hole?’ where users share stories of behaviour that has got them in trouble, asking for the public’s opinion on who is really in the wrong.

The mum claimed that her mother-in-law, who is her husband’s mother, had a very blasé attitude to life – but she never imagined it would extend to childcare.

“About a week and a half ago while she was babysitting, I got a call from her saying my son had a bit of a tumble,” she wrote.

“I heard my son screaming in the background and my instincts said something was extremely wrong, so I said to get off the phone with me and call an ambulance, then call me back and tell me what happened once the ambulance was on the way.

“She started handwaving it with ‘I don’t think we need to bother with an ambulance, babies are tougher than they look you know, basically made of rubber.'”

The mother-in-law went on to admit the baby had “a bit of a scrape and a bruise” and, when pushed, confessed it was on his head.

The furious mum hung up and immediately called an ambulance, terrified at what a head injury could mean for a three-month-old.

“It turns out she not only dropped my son, she dropped him while walking down the stairs, so he fell onto the second from bottom step and hit his head on the third from bottom step,” the mum continued.

“She then wasted time calling her son, who told her she should probably call me or my husband.”

Even at the hospital, the mother-in-law remained “dismissive” until the mum asked her to leave.

The doctors told the mum her baby was going to be okay but had suffered a minor skull fracture.

When the mum called the mother-in-law to tell her, she says she answered the phone with: “What did I tell you, he’s fine, isn’t he?”

The “condescending” tone infuriated the mum so much, she decided to lie to try to teach her mother-in-law a lesson and told her the doctors were not sure if the baby was going to survive.

It was only then, the mum said, that she got the apology and guilt she had wanted.

“My husband’s father and grandmother are really mad, they think it was a dirty trick to lie to an old lady about her grandson’s injury, but my husband and I maintain that she deserved to feel bad about what happened to my son, and she obviously wasn’t until she thought his life was in danger,” she wrote.

“I for one will never let her near my son again, but I hope she’ll now be more careful about the safety of any other children she has care over.”

Reddit users flooded to the comment section to give their vote on who was in the wrong and the general consensus was that the mother-in-law deserved to feel guilty about the horror accident.

One wrote: “A SKULL FRACTURE. IN A THREE-MONTH-OLD BABY.

“My heart stopped when I read that. That is TERRIFYING. If it was me, that woman would never, ever, ever be forgiven for that, and my children would never be anywhere near her again.”

Another agreed: “You handled this better than most people, don’t feel guilty about the lesson you gave to grandma. It was petty but I hope it opened her eyes about what could have happen.

“In the meantime, even tho you already know that, don’t let her near your kid alone.”
